 Bowl Results

Georgetown Tigers defeat the William Penn Statsmen 22-14.  Click here for news article.

Team Dyersburg would like to thank both teams and their fans for a great game.  The football players/staff  from both schools were first class.   These young people represented their schools and left a lasting, positive impression.   William Penn and Georgetown should be proud of the discipline and respect that these student athletes display, both on and off the field.

Another example of where football is just more than a game; it builds character.

About the Big River Bowl

The Big River Bowl started as  a vision that  become a reality.  James Counce, retired Dyersburg High School head coach,  wanted to bring something positive and wholesome that families could attend along with promoting our community.  Team Dyersburg was formed in January 2008 with the purpose of bringing positive sports events to Dyersburg. Team Dyersburg formed a partnership with the NAIA and petitioned the organization for a pre-season bowl game.  In April of 2008, the NAIA sanctioned Dyersburg's bid.  Team Dyersburg elected to establish the theme “Big River” in honor of the rich tradition and history of the Mississippi River which forms Dyer County's western border.

Big River Bowl Facilities

The game is played on the campus of Dyersburg High School at JC Sawyers Stadium.

Dyersburg High School is recognized as a National School of Excellence, Redbook Top 10 School, and National Blue Ribbon School.

Media & Team Banquet - featured speaker was Bill Bates

Bates attended Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tn . He led the Farragut Admirals to the State Semi-Finals in 1978, in which the Admirals lost to Red Bank by one point. Bates played college football at the University of Tennessee where he was second team All-SEC as a junior and senior.

Bates is the player whom the great University of Georgia running back Herschel Walker ran over en route to a touchdown in 1980. Because of his size -- Bates was later listed by the Cowboys at 6'1" and 203 pounds -- he was not highly recruited when he graduated college. He joined the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, where he spent his entire career. He was a one-time Pro-Bowler in 1984 as a special teams player, a spot that was basically created for him, where he was also elected All-Pro that season. While with the Cowboys, he played in Super Bowl  XXVIII and XXX (Bates was injured when the Cowboys played in Super Bowl XXVII.) His autobiography is entitled Shoot for the Star. He spent one year with the Jacksonville Jaguars  as Special Teams Coach in 2001. On August 18, 2005 Bates was inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.
